Account Hijacking and Identity Verification — Lessons from the Poiyomi Incident

Hola. ¿Cómo están todos?

Soy Hiro del Laboratorio de Full Body Tracking.

Today I want to discuss account hijacking and the challenge of proving identity online, using the Poiyomi incident as a case study.

The Poiyomi shader is one of the most widely used avatar shaders in VRChat. When its creator’s account was compromised, it raised serious questions about trust and verification in our community.

When a key figure’s account gets hijacked, how do you distinguish the real person from the impostor? How do you verify identity in a space where everyone operates through avatars and handles?

These questions have no easy answers, but they’re becoming increasingly important as VRChat grows and more people depend on tools and assets created by community members.

The incident highlighted the need for better security practices, backup verification methods, and community awareness of social engineering risks. For creators especially, having verified channels of communication — separate from any single platform — is essential.
