“Are You Still Just a Good Prompter?” — Understanding Three Types of AI Engineering Changes Everything
Hola. ¿Cómo están todos?
Soy Hiro del Laboratorio de Full Body Tracking.
Most people using AI start with prompts. That’s natural. But there are two more levels beyond prompting that completely change what AI can do for you.
Level 1: Prompt Engineering
Writing good instructions for AI. “You are a professional editor. Please proofread this.” Giving context, being specific, structuring your requests well.
This matters. But it has limits: you repeat yourself constantly, quality drifts in long conversations, and past knowledge can’t carry over.
Level 2: Context Engineering
Designing what information AI sees, when, and in what order. Instead of putting everything in the prompt, you strategically feed AI the right background at the right time.
Four key techniques: Selection (choosing relevant info), Compression (condensing to essentials), Segmentation (feeding info in stages), Writing Out (removing noise).
Level 3: Harness Engineering
Designing the entire environment AI operates in. Not just what you say or show, but the structural rails that keep AI running correctly.
My harness includes:
- Skills/Personas: Predefined rules in files (writing style, prohibitions, identity)
- Knowledge Base: Organized past work AI can reference
- Workflows: Step-by-step procedures written in files
- Memory: Decision logs that persist across sessions
- Quality Checks: Automated validators that catch errors
The critical difference: Context engineering uses “requests” — please do this, don’t do that. Harness engineering uses “structure” — rails that only allow correct direction. Requests can be forgotten; structure cannot.
Restaurant Analogy
- Prompt Engineering = Placing a good order
- Context Engineering = Sourcing quality ingredients
- Harness Engineering = Designing the kitchen
All three are needed. Best order + best ingredients + best kitchen = AI actually performing well.
They’re Layers, Not Replacements
Newer doesn’t make older obsolete. All three work simultaneously as different layers. Even with a harness, you still write prompts. Even with great context, sloppy prompts produce sloppy results.
AI only performs at its best when all three layers are properly in place.
