“I Want to Dance” Isn’t Enough — I Can’t Recommend Full-Body Tracking
Hola. ¿Cómo están todos?
Soy Hiro del Laboratorio de Full Body Tracking.
Today I’m writing something I’ve wanted to say for a long time.
I get all kinds of questions about choosing full-body tracking devices. And the question that stumps me most is:
“I want to dance. Which full tracking should I get?”
I get the feeling. But with just that question, I can’t give you an answer.
The Premise: How Do YOU Want to Move?
The most important thing in choosing a full tracking device isn’t the equipment’s specs. It’s whether YOU know “how you want to move.”
Many people who come to me for advice can’t clearly articulate how they want to move. They say “I won’t move much,” but then reject “calibrating once every 30 minutes.” That’s not a low-movement person’s requirement.
Your understanding of your own movement and what you expect from a device aren’t aligned. Until they are, I can’t make recommendations.
For Immersion Seekers
For people seeking immersion, the top priority is “absolutely no drift.”
No-drift devices generally means:
- VIVE Tracker (SteamVR Base Station method)
- VIVE Ultimate Tracker
Exception: If you’ll only use it for about 45 minutes, current-gen IMU devices work fine. Modern ones hold up for roughly 45 minutes.
The 45-minute border is a useful benchmark. Under 45 minutes, IMU has cost advantages. Over 45 minutes but not intense, VIVE is the happier choice.
For Streamers and VTubers
For streamers, VIVE Tracker or Ultimate Tracker is generally the safe bet.
But some VTubers actually don’t need full tracking at all. V-Singers who just turn slightly on stage, for example — a headset alone with Virtual Desktop or SlimeVR’s virtual tracker feature can create a convincing look without tracking the lower body.
Full tracking isn’t for everyone.
Start with Free Full Tracking
I recommend first trying “free full tracking using a camera” to check your own movements. Many people realize they don’t need full tracking at all. Equipment desire should come AFTER wanting to move more.
mocopi
mocopi is actually quite recommendable for VTubers. Its killer feature is outdoor motion capture capability — something other devices simply don’t offer.
The IMU sensors are honestly weak. But the “outdoor capture” characteristic is unique. VTubers wanting to do location-based streaming should keep it in mind.
Resumen
The key takeaway: if you can’t articulate “how you want to move,” I can’t recommend a device either.
Put your use case into specific words. “I’ll only use it 45 minutes.” “I want to stream outdoors.” “I just sit and watch.” That level of specificity lets me give precise recommendations.
